5K Failure
Yesterday, I attempted the Reindeer Run 5K. I ended up walking about half of it.
I think a couple factors were at play. First, I started out way too fast. I was keeping up with people that I now realize were going much faster than my 15min/mile pace. Probably more around a 12min/mile. Secondly, I didn't have Jeff. I think running with Jeff keeps me going more than I wanted to admit. He's always pulling on his leash, which keeps me going and keeps my mind off my running. Third, and I don't know why this is, but my last few runs have been bad. On the day before Thanksgiving I ran an awesome run around Lake Nokomis, about 2.7 miles. All three of my runs after that were terrible. Either I had to walk parts of them or I was barely moving I was running so slow.
But, try try again. I'm considering running a New Year's Day run, but that seems inconvenient. I've been having some serious leg pain, so I may take the week off and reassess after that. I think I'll walk what I would have run this week. I'm really wanting to try a half marathon, so I want to keep running, but this leg pain cannot continue. It keeps me from walking down stairs like a normal person.

Hey, finishing, whether your steps were walking or running, counts in my book! And now you know more for pacing next time.

I second Emily. If you crossed that finish line, you win.
On leg pain — have you have your gait evaluated by anyone (at a running store or elsewhere)? When I started running, the biggest factors leading to pain were the wrong (unsupportive) shoes for my foot type and trying to increase my distance/speed too quickly.
Anyway, big congrats! You are awesome.

I got my shoes from Marathon Sports and was evaluated for them, but I think my running style is different than my walking style, so maybe I should look at getting a new pair. And I'm sure my extra 100 pounds doesn't help with the pain.

Yeah, find out from a reputable source what pronation type you are. Then you will know the best shoe for your running type.

I fail to see the failure in signing up for, showing up for, and completing a 5k.
THAT IS AWESOME.
Secondly, I'm happy to run intervals with you any time you want. It really helps me to meet people for my workouts and it's easier for me to feel motivated when I'm side by side (probably much like you and Jeff). You'd be surprised how much faster you're able to run when someone is distracting you, and then soon as you know it it's time to walk, you regain breath and start running again.
Let me know if you want to.

I'm sure the increasingly cold temperatures are not helping. Congratulations!

If I even THOUGHT of running that far, I'd collapse. And I'm not even necessarily out of shape, just horribly lazy. The fact is, you tried, and that's more than a lot of people can say. So kudos anyway! :P
